Richard T. Bosshardt, M.D.

Dr. Bosshardt received his bachelor’s degree in science from the University of Miami, Magna Cum Laude, then attended the School of Medicine, graduating in 1978. He completed a general surgery residency at the United States Naval Hospital in Oakland, California. His residency term was interrupted from 1979-80 when he served as medical officer aboard the USS Wabash and was deployed to the Western Pacific with an aircraft carrier task force. During that year, the Wabash was involved in the rescue of Vietnamese boat people and was part of operations to end the Iranian hostage crisis in 1980. The USS Wabash crew received several decorations for this deployment, including the Meritorious Unit Commendation.
Upon completion of his training, Dr. Bosshardt served as a general surgeon at the United States Naval Hospital in Okinawa, Japan from 1984-87. During this time, he obtained his board certification from the American Board of Surgery. While in Okinawa, Dr. Bosshardt applied, and was accepted, for residency training in plastic surgery under world-renowned plastic surgeon, D. Ralph Millard, Jr., M.D., at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Medical Center in Miami, Florida. He was honorably discharged from the Navy with the rank of Commander in 1987 and completed his plastic surgery training in Miami from 1987-89.
Dr. Bosshardt arrived in Lake County in July of 1989 as the first plastic surgeon to practice full time in the county. He obtained life-long certification by the American Board of Plastic Surgery in 1991.
Dr. Bosshardt retired from clinical practice of plastic surgery on October 1, 2024. He intends to stay connected to medicine via his writings and engagement in organizations advocating for traditional Hippocratic medicine- Do No Harm and FAIR in Medicine.
Since starting in private practice, Dr. Bosshardt has participated regularly in overseas medical missions to provide reconstructive surgery to children with cleft lip, cleft palate. and other problems. His travels have taken him to the Philippines, Guatemala, Peru, Brazil, Venezuela, the West Bank, and Mexico. Dr. Bosshardt performs both cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgery in his practice, which has grown to two surgeons working out of a modern facility that houses the only state licensed private surgical suite in Central Florida dedicated exclusively to plastic surgery. He has privileges at AdventHealth Waterman, University of Florida Leesburg Hospital, and South Lake Hospital.
Dr. Bosshardt has evolved to focus especially on aesthetic and reconstructive breast surgery, but he continues to provide services in most areas of plastic surgery. Dr. Bosshardt is a avid reader and also enjoys writing. For over twenty five years he wrote a weekly medical column in the Orlando Sentinel, House Calls. He was one of the original contributing writers and wrote a monthly article for Healthy Living Magazine in Lake and Sumter County until it closed in 2020. He is one of the original bloggers on the Orlando Sentinel blog site over the years that this site was active.

Q: …read your article in City Journal, and loved it. …my question is, growing up, I spent the summers at my grandparents cabin on Flathead Lake, Montana. 3 cabins down from us, was Dr. Bosshardt’s cabin, from California. He had 3 sons, but the only one I remember was Lane, who was my age. This would have been the late 50’s, to early 60’s. I’ve only seen your last name once, until today. Are you related?
Thank you for your time.
Terry Hughes
We are almost certainly related. The Bosshardt name is unusual in the US, especially with that spelling, and most often found in Minnesota and surrounding areas where my father, grandparents, and great grandparents are from. It is common in Switzerland, especially around Zurich.
Q: Thank you for your interview with Tucker. Lots of great info. Hope something positive comes from it.
Thank you! I do as well.
Q: Dear Dr. Bosshardt,
I just watched you on Tucker Carlson show, I truly appreciate your story, I know it is hard to come forward to tell the facts.
My daughter had a total mastectomy last year. She is a surgical nurse with the VA hospital in Portland Oregon. This surgery went very badly, she has lymph node damage, and problems with the reconstruction of the breasts. I will pay for further advice for her recovery and or surgery. It is very difficult for her to work, the pain, swelling in her arms and other problems continue. Can you please contact me for an appointment for my daughter? I trust your opinion. Thank you for your time. Mary Rangel
Mary,
I am very sorry to hear that. Even the best surgeons get complications. I am retiired and no longer seeing patients. I would be happy to discuss this with you or your daughter over the phone to see if I can offer any insights, but I no longer treat patients. I am in Florida. The best breast surgeon I know who is in practice today is Dennis Hammond in Grand Rapids, MI. If you contact him, feel free to use my name. I will say a prayer for success for your daughter's care.

Q: Dear Dr. Bosshardt,
My name is Sunana Batra and i was riveted by your appearance on the Tucker Carlson show this past weekend. I live in San Diego Ca and my brother is also a plastic surgeon. His practice is called Coastal Plastic Surgeons. I am interested in writing about the issue of DEI in a more localized piece that I could submit to the San Diego Union Tribune. Do you know of resources that I might use to gather polling or what prospective patients encounter when seeking a plastic surgeon? Most of my brother's patients arrive to the practice by either word of mouth, or as referrals through the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. I'd be grateful for any insight you might offer to me in terms of places to look that may not be obvious to me.
Respectfully, Sunana Batra
Sunana,
I am afraid that I can be of little help. I have never done any polling or tried to obtain lists such as for demographics, etc. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons, www.plasticsurgery.org, may have some resources. Despite my own marketing with a website (now closed), billboards, etc. I found that the majority of my patients came to me through word of mouth either from other patients or people in my community. The rest came from doctor referrals, our marketing, and my writing. Although I was never a fan of billboards-this was done by my younger partner, they were surprisingly effective. Not sure if this helps.

Q: Here are some studies on racial concordance in medicine (from a fellow surgeon). Now maybe you can not straight up lie on interviews about whether there is evidence supporting concordance.

Dear Anonymous,
I ignored the insult and gave you the consideration to look up each one of your references. I discounted several outright. One had nothing to do with quality of care and outcomes. Another, referenced Press Ganey scores, which have nothing to do with quality of medical care. I would suggest you read the systematic review by pasting the link below in your browser. Given your obvious bias and unwillingness to even identify yourself, I suspect you won't. Since you clearly favor segregation in medicine, good luck finding a physician of your own race, ethnicity, or whatever.

Q: Your evidence for DEI causing lower standards in surgery is that a white male provider couldn't close an abdomen??? How do you possibly establish causation there? Research has demonstrated improved surgical outcomes over the last decades, how is that possible if you think surgeons are no longer competent?
Also, you lied about the evidence linking physician work hours with patient outcomes:
https://www.jointcommissionjournal.com/article/S1553-7250(23)00154-X/fulltext
You should be ashamed of pushing false narratives that are not backed up by evidence.
Dear Anonymous,
I did not use my examples as evidence of DEI related decline, which I believe is very real, by the way. I used it as an example of supposedly competent, qualified individuals geting through an entire residency without basic core competency, such as closing an abdomen or performing a node dissection. If you can't do these, you shouldn't be doing surgery. Please provide references for your claim that "research has demonstrated improved surgical outcomes......" How can you say that? As to my lying, as you put it, look at the limitations of your own reference. Did you even read it to see how it lists disclaimer after disclaimer? I have more than enough observational information, backed by 47 years as a physician, and confirmation from other surgeons to make the assertions that I did. If I am wrong, show me.
By the way, I would take you more seriously if you were willing to identify yourself. Why hide behind anonymity? I don't bite.......

Q: Dr Bosshardt,
As an American citizen, father and husband, your recent advocacy for common sense has opened my eyes. Thank you for doing the hard work of trying to make a difference. My infant child had an aortic valvoplasty at WVU, 17 years ago, and to this day, his cardiac measurements are spot on. The potential follow-up procedure is not even close to needed still. Dr Gustafson did fantastic work. You interview on T.C. was an eye opener. I nominate you sir for the position of President of the FACS.
Thank you again!
Keith,
Thank you for the kind words.

Q: Dr Bosshardt,
I can’t say much, but did you know that the absite is truly rigged? It ends up mattering so much in selection within residency and fellowship itself, and it is completely rigged.
The question pool is very small and circled within the region and are shared openly and is has been gamed.
Teriyaki PorkRibs,
Say what?
Q:
Hi Dr. Bosshardt,
We helped Dr. Shah Vira land 4 pre-paid consults + 1 surgery in 2 weeks with our Surgery Scale System.
Think this could work for you?
I am retired, so, no.
Q: Just finished watching/listening to the interview with Tucker Carlson. We are both of the 80’s vintage. Retired from pathology mid 2021. Early in my career through it’s midpoint was a tenured academic teaching medical students and residents. Observed exactly what you described in medical and pathology training. DEI has terribly distorted and damaged the practice of medicine. I have no trust in younger physicians to have the skill set needed for critical thought to solve my health issues as they arise. Finding classmates to care for my family and friends is an ever shrinking pool. Thank you for a very well presented conversation with Tucker.
DG,
We share the same concerns for our future personal healthcare. I am fortunate in having a daughter and son-in-law who are both excellent physicians and will help me navigate the medical landscape as a patient when I am no longer able to do this for myself. Hopefully, that period of incapacity will be blessedly brief.
